Volcei National Archaeological Museum "Marcello Gigante"

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Volcei "Marcello Gigante" a Buccino

The National Archaeological Museum is housed inside the cloister of the Eremitani of Sant'Agostino, built in 1474 by the architect Natale di Ragusa by enlarging an older 13th-century convent building.

The museum is named in memory of Marcello Gigante, a philologist and scholar originally from Buccino who was among the supporters of the establishment of an archaeological museum dedicated to the ancient Volcei from which the town of Buccino originated in the Middle Ages. The exhibition itinerary, which covers about 1600 square metres on four levels, traces the history of the populations that inhabited the territory dominated by Volcei over the centuries.

The exhibition begins in the prehistoric section with the oldest finds discovered in the area and belonging to the Eneolithic period, specifically the 'Gaudo' culture.

The third room houses the section 'Birth of an Identity' in which the formation period of a true culture, the 'Culture of the Platanus Valley', is illustrated with exhibits ranging from the 8th to the 7th century BC.

On the second level is the section 'Princes and Warriors' where large tombs from the 6th to 5th centuries BC are exhibited. With the presentation of the Sacred Area of Santo Stefano begins the section 'An Aristocratic Family', in which the famous finds of the 'Lady of the Golds' dating back to the 4th century BC are exhibited, as well as the banquet hall of the sanctuary with a mosaic floor dating back to the 4th century BC, and the fragment of the crater of Assteas, a famous Pestan potter found in the Volceian area.

The 'History of the City' is told in the time gallery through multimedia stations, models and exhibits that tell five centuries of the history of ancient Volcei. The last room of the museum is dedicated to the Roman period 'The City of Marble' when Volcei experienced its heyday.
