Dalia, una giovane ragazza cresciuta a Londra senza motivazioni né aspettative per il futuro, viene mandata dalla madre in un paesino nelle Langhe, a prendersi cura del nonno Igor, con la speranza che la vita rurale aiuti la ragazza a trovare la sua strada. All’arrivo Dalia scopre che il nonno, la cui salute peggiora di giorno in giorno a causa della demenza senile, ha ricevuto una notifica di sfratto dovuta all’espansione delle aziende vinicole locali, che sperano di impossessarsi della terra un tempo destinata ai cacciatori di tartufi. Per trovare in poco tempo una somma di denaro sufficiente per pagare la casa ed evitare lo sfratto, Igor decide di condividere i segreti dei trifolai con la nipote e di mandarla nei boschi assieme alla cagnolina Birba, alla ricerca di un grande tartufo bianco, in modo da salvare, con il suo valore inestimabile, la loro casa.
